The 3D Printing Store was asked by Worker Studio to be part of the team to bring the vision of the Space Foundation “Space in our State” project to life, highlighting all the aerospace assets in Colorado for the  35th Space Symposium. The final Space in Our State full-sized model will reside at the Space Foundation Discovery Center.  The project is using Augmented Reality and a 3D printed map of the state to show with pictures and information the many space companies, universities, military and defense space installations and national laboratories who are working on aerospace in Colorado.

As the team embarked on this project, we discussed the space-based GPS data that was essential to both creating a topological map of the state to locating the assets on the map. The Worker Studio team brought to life COSMO - the intrepid Mars explorer to be our guide across the state. Together, we gathered the resources, talents, technology and know-how from the visionary team at the Space Foundation, the creative team from Worker Studio and the expert 3D Printing Store team to bring the project to completion. All Colorado entities working together to create the first iteration of Space in Our State  shown at the  35th Space Symposium.

“In addition to getting a dream team of collaborators, the Space in our State prototype fulfilled 2 important missions for us at Worker Studio. Discovery Center enabled us to debut our STEAM inspired animated character, Cosmo  or Eugene “Cosmo” Nutt, as an augmented reality host on the map. We are passionate about inventive storytelling that inspires an understanding of how essential aerospace is in Colorado and how essential Colorado is to the history and future of aerospace. The vision that Rachel and Elias from Discovery Center have for this exhibit inspired us to create something that has never been seen before in augmented reality. This is more than a gimmick or novelty - it will be a powerful tool for engagement and learning. That’s only possible when you have technology leaders by your side and we have that with Argis Solutions and Pruim - our developer and programming partners and The 3D Printing Store to create the actual map. The Space in Our State Map will allow us to bring to life Colorado history, technology and innovation.” -Workers Studio

“Creating the map for the Space in Our State project required both gathering the GPS data in a format that could be printed and getting all the coordinates correct for the final print. For the initial version shown at Space Symposium, we used many tools to isolate the area around Colorado Springs at the correct scale and with a representation of Interstate 25 to provide a visual reference for the map. There were many phone calls and emails with the team to verify the data prior to final printing. We know the value of the aerospace supply chain Colorado and being part of the Space in our State project is a role we are happy to fulfill.” –The 3D Printing Store

“Colorado has one of the highest numbers of businesses and schools in the nation contributing to the advancement of space exploration. Space in Our State will allow visitors to bring Colorado to life as they learn about our state’s important role in getting space programs “off the ground.” - Space Foundation
